WAUSAU - Two Wausau West High School students will perform this week with a national honor choir in Minneapolis.
Lucas Fischer, a senior, and junior Sam Nienhuis will spend much of the week singing and training with Grammy-winning composer Eric Whitacre. They will then sing in two performances with the Minnesota Orchestra on Saturday at Orchestra Hall. Fischer and Nienhuis were chosen based on audition recordings they submitted to the American Choral Directors Association National Honor Choir, with help from Wausau West choir director Brad Burrill. They were among 4,200 students who submitted recordings.
The two students squeezed preparations for the big week around other school-related activities. Nienhuis recently performed in the Central Wisconsin Educational Theater Alliance productions of "Shrek," and Fischer is a drum major and percussionist who performed with the Wausau West Band at the state high school hockey tournaments in Madison, in the recent State Jazz Honor Choir and the State Honors Jazz Band, as well as the University of Wisconsin Marathon County Jazz Band.
Nienhuis is son of Dean and Sarah Nienhuis, and Fischer is the son of Michael Fischer, all of Rib Mountain.
