WAUSAU - The Wausau River-Wolves junior hockey team recently added a familiar name to the staff for its upcoming inaugural season.

Jordan Schmidt, a Wausau West graduate, was named the RiverWolves associate head coach late last week after two years as an assistant with the Warriors boys team.

The hiring was announced in a RiverWolves media release. Schmidt will be part of Tim Brownell’s coaching staff. Brownell was introduced as the River-Wolves coach during a media conference at Marathon Park in May.

Schmidt, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point in 2014, coached the Mosinee High School boys hockey team for two seasons before he was hired as an assistant job with Wausau West under coach B.J. Brandt.

Schmidt, who was a unanimous all-Wisconsin Valley Conference selection in 2009 in his senior season at West, is the latest local addition to the North American 3 Hockey League team.

The team, which relocated to Wausau from Romeoville, Illinois, announced in May that it had signed former Wausau West player Cale Bowman along with Merrill’s Austin Burgener and D.C. Everest’s Seth Jaglinski.

Two former Wausau West players could potentially join the roster as well. West’s forward Christian Bardarson was selected 14th overall in the first round of the NA3HL Draft in June, and defensemen Kellen Tharaldson was selected by the team in the second round (60th overall).

Both were seniors on the West team that reached the WIAA state semifinals this year, and Tharaldson was also selected in the third round of the North

American Hockey League Draft, which was held in June as well. The NAHL is a Tier II program, one level ahead of the NA3HL.

The team will have a 25-player roster and tryout camp is expected to open shortly after Labor Day weekend.

The RiverWolves open its 47game season on Oct. 13 at Marathon Park. The Tier III program, which announced its schedule in a media release Tuesday, will play 23 games, at Marathon Park and all but four of which will be on Friday or Saturday nights. The team will also play three games on Wednesday and one on Sunday.

All home games begin at 7 pm and the regular season ends on March 3, followed by the postseason and Silver Cup championship series.

The RiverWolves also announced the season tickets prices on Tuesday. The season tickets are $184 per seat for the 23 home games, or $90 for a 10 game flex package.
